A Case of Identity

A young woman named Mary Sutherland seeks Holmes's help. She is deeply in love with a quiet, gentle man named Hosmer Angel, who suddenly disappeared on their wedding day. Mary has a comfortable income and lives with her domineering stepfather, James Windibank. Holmes quickly deduces that "Hosmer Angel" is actually a fictional identity created by the stepfather himself, using a clever disguise and false letters. Windibank wanted to prevent Mary from marrying anyone so he could continue controlling her money. Holmes proves the deception but cannot take legal action because no actual crime was committed — only a cruel trick. He warns Mary, but she refuses to believe him until she sees proof.
