Description
A respectable gentleman named Mr. Neville St. Clair has apparently vanished. His wife claims she saw him at a second-floor window of a disreputable opium den in the East End, and moments later, she discovered a filthy, deformed beggar — known for his twisted lip — in the room below. The beggar is arrested, but there is no sign of Mr. St. Clair. Holmes discovers that the "beggar" is actually St. Clair himself, disguised. To support his wealthy family, St. Clair had secretly been posing as a professional beggar, earning a fortune from pity. The "disappearance" was a failed attempt to hide his double life after his wife unexpectedly spotted him in his beggar disguise.
